Tinnitus is a common symptom which affects approximately 50 million adults in the United States. At Physicians Choice Hearing, we offer a comprehensive Tinnitus Care Program designed to evaluate and manage your individual symptoms.
What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of actual external auditory sound. Many people refer to it as “ringing in the ears,” but it can be experienced in many variations including buzzing, clicking, whistling and bells. In rare cases patients will experience musical tinnitus where they actually perceive the presence of specific songs. Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the United States experience tinnitus but only 20% of those seek clinical intervention. The primary difference between patients bothered by their unwanted noises and those who are not is simple: Habituation. Habituation is learning to ignore the stimulus or ringing in the ears. Most people naturally habituate their recurring sounds, therefore it is not bothersome. For some, the symptoms have become so pronounced that it becomes a distraction throughout the day and night. Those people should seek treatment help from our expert team of providers.
Causes of Tinnitus
Tinnitus is often a byproduct of age related hearing loss and noise induced hearing loss. Other factors associated include but are not limited to Meniere’s Disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, otosclerosis, head trauma, medications or acoustic neuroma.
