Sometimes, the idea of a test can be nerve-wracking, especially when the results are concerning your health. Understandably, this can be an off-putting factor for people considering going for a hearing test. The nerves usually come from the unknown – what actually happens during a hearing test? Is it painful? How long will it take?
Well, if you’re reading this blog, you’re probably asking the same questions too. This blog will give you a brief overview of what happens at a hearing test and what you can expect when you arrive at any of our hearing clinics in East Tennessee.
Do I need to book a hearing test?
Before even considering what happens during a hearing test, sometimes figuring out whether you need one or not can be challenging. When hearing loss occurs over time and is therefore very gradual, it can be hard to judge the degree of the damage. Maybe you’ve found yourself turning up the TV louder, or a family member has noticed you’re asking them to repeat themselves often – then this would be a good indicator that a hearing test is needed.
Sudden hearing loss due to an accident or blockage will be noticeable immediately, in which case a hearing test is needed right away.
There is no checklist for needing a hearing test. If you are unsure or have any concern for your or a loved one’s hearing health, it is definitely worth coming in for a regular check-up.
What to expect during the test
A main concern for most people is whether the hearing test will be painful. You will be glad to know that hearing tests are completely pain-free, non-invasive, and typically only last around 20 minutes.
The first thing we’ll do is check your ears for anything visible that could be causing your hearing issues. We will then sit in one of our sound booths and play a combination of sounds to determine your ability to distinguish sounds. The booth helps to eliminate any other sounds and interruptions during the test.
Once the test is finished, we will share your results with you immediately so that we can discuss your options. These options may include further tests or treatment to get to the bottom of your hearing problem.
